In 3 days, you’ll visit several Miao villages including the largest Miao village in China and even in the world - Xijiang Miao Village, Langde Upper Miao Village, Matang Gejia Village, Shiqiao Miao Village and Wudong Miao Village. Each Miao village has its distinctive features that you’ll never get bored about them. In Matang, you can learn how to make batik with wax from the local villagers; while in Wudong, you can even go fishing in the rice paddy fields to learn their farming system; as well, you’ll be attracted by the welcome ceremony of Langde and the breathtaking panoramic view of Xijiang Miao Village... Welcome to Kaili, the capital of Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture. Upon arrival, our local tour guide will meet you with a sign on which says your names at the arrival hall in the airport or train station. Then, our guide and driver will transfer you to Kaili downtown area by our comfortable private car (non-smoking), and the guide will help you check in to your hotel.
In this afternoon, drive about 19 km (about 0.5 hour) to Matang Gejia Village, a primitive Miao village with over 400 Gejia people who are called the 57th ethnic group in China unofficially. According to the legend, Gejia people are the direct descendants of Hou Yi, a legendary hero who was said to shoot the nine scorching suns in order to save his people. Matang Village is famous for exotic attires, colorful festivals and countryside feelings. The women and girls here are specialized in batik that you can fully appreciate the uniqueness of the Gejia batik patterns and embroidery as well as the excellent craftsmanship of the villagers. If you are interested, you can learn how to make batik with wax from a local master and create your own batik work (optional experience).
After the fantastic experience in Matang, drive about 40 km (about 1hr) to Shiqiao Miao Village. Shiqiao Village is famous for the national intangible cultural heritage of traditional paper making with trees’ bark by Miao ethnic group. Traditionally, paper was first invented during the Eastern Han Dynasty around the year of 100 BC from hemp, tree barks and old rags, etc. While the paper making technology in Shiqiao can be dated back to 1,300 years and the skill is called Tang Dynasty paper making. Catch the great opportunity to see the traditional ways of making papers. If interested, you can learn paper making in the Chuan Cave, from which the underground river water in quite clean and good for the paper quality.
After the tour, be escorted back to Kaili City.
After breakfast, your guide and driver will pick you up at your hotel. Today, you’ll be transferred about 28 km for a visit to Langde Upper Miao Village which is reputed as “the Hometown of Chinese Folk Song and Dance Art”. It is with less crowds, peaceful natural atmosphere, friendly villagers and rich cultural heritage. Upon arrival at the village, you will be warmly treated with a traditional welcome ceremony by the beautiful ladies and girls dressed in traditional Miao costumes (long skirt). They will set twelve tables with “block-the-way” wine and you can taste the wine to feel their hospitality. Once the toasts are completed, you will continue to experience the singing and dancing performance at the Lusheng Ground. The men will play Lusheng and the ladies will dance. If you like, you can participate in the dance to enjoy more fun.
Next, you’ll move to Wudong Miao Village which is 30 km away from Langde (0.5-1 hour’s driving). Wudong Village is at 1300 meters above sea level nestled on the hillside of the Leigong Mountain, among terraced fields, vegetables gardens and lush forests. The whole village is made out of the traditional Miao type of dwelling - Diaojiaolou which usually have 3 floors - the first is for livestock, the second is where people live, and the third floor is used for storage. You can take a look at the oldest water mill/wheel in all of Leishan County. The most interesting part is to go fishing with Miao group’s bamboo baskets in the local rice paddy fields and get to know their farming system and daily life better (go fishing is usually available in summer during July ~ September). After that, the local hostess will show you how to cook Miao famous cuisine - Fish in Sour Soup. Enjoy the lunch at the local house.
Later, drive to Xijiang Miao Village, the largest Miao village in China and even in the world. Xijiang is composed of 10 villages, spreading over 50 square kilometers, with about 1,000 families and 6,000 people living here. The village is called a “living museum”, presenting you Miao ethnic culture vividly. There are lots of streets and alleys winding around the village, and quiet clear rivers and Wind and Rain Bridges to cross over. You can try the local Guizhou snacks, browse the many shops or just enjoy a leisurely roam in the village and surrounding scenic areas and learn more about local Miao culture. When night falls, take a sightseeing bus to the viewing platform to catch a panoramic night view of the beautiful Xijiang. The lights of different houses twinkling in the dark make the night bewitching.
Have a good sleep in Xijiang tonight.
Wake up joyfully in the morning. After breakfast, you’ll enjoy some peaceful time exploring in the village. Take a visit to Miao Nationality Museum which is made of eleven exhibition halls and houses wonderful displays of cultural artifacts, traditional dress, architectural marvels and works of art. If you like, you can get to the viewing platform again to shoot the panorama. You can also rent a traditional costume of the Miao people to take photos here if you are interested (optional experience).
After the memorable time in Xijiang, it is time to say goodbye to this Miao capital. Be escorted to the railway station or airport in Kaili for a train / flight to next destination. Service ends!
