The sub-adult pandas begin to leave their mothers at one and a half to three years of age. In wild, young pandas wander for several years to find the best territory. Pandas were once thought to be private, solitary, meeting only to mate, but recent date shows that giant pandas share territories in small groups, and meet outside of the breeding season.
